Embracing Interoperability for Digital Transformation in Transportation

Interoperable, accessible data throughout the project lifecycle unlocks the power of digital transformation and creates better project outcomes. As the official contractor for AASHTOWare Project, Infotech worked with Autodesk to integrate Civil 3D and AASHTOWare Project for Montana Department of Transportation. The interoperability between these infrastructure solutions connects the design phase to field construction operations, creating a connected environment between these previously siloed departments.

Increased funding for State Departments of Transportation, stronger industry collaborations and clear nudges from Federal Highway Administration are helping state agencies embrace a connected environment and adopt true digital delivery. During infrastructure projects, design focuses on the specifications and costs for the safe, efficient construction of an asset. Then, construction focuses on the physical creation of that asset. The integration between Autodesk Civil 3D and AASHTOWare Project creates an integrated digital workflow between design and construction, linking design objects to bid and pay items, that ultimately allows the engineer and constructor to make better, data-informed decisions This integration:

  • Creates design access to real cost information and automates quantity information for estimating and construction

  • Connects the bid and pay item with the design features of objects to provide a two-way data integration

  • Provides access to the AASHTOWare Project item list in Civil 3D for DOTs to seamlessly assign items to design objects

  • Closes a workflow gap by enabling DOTs to take quantities directly from Civil 3D without error-prone and time-consuming manual entry

“Interoperability between Civil 3D and AASHTOWare Project will help us connect our design phase to our field construction operations. It will save time, save costs, and ultimately, enable us to be more accountable to the taxpayers who fund our transportation projects.”

Patrick Lane, Digital Delivery Project Manager for the Montana Department of Transportation
