Federal Funding for Transportation Projects: A List of Resources

Are you looking to secure additional funding for your transportation and infrastructure construction projects through federal grant and aid programs?

Agencies seeking assistance from federal funds have a number of options to pursue.

We’ve organized and summarized these resources to help your agency get started.

Have any questions? Feel free to contact us. Infotech works with state DOTs on a regular basis and is familiar with many of the requirements and stipulations of these grants. We are also happy to connect you with our DOT peers so you can ask any questions you may have about federal funding.

We also help construction management teams remain compliant during federal and state audits through our Appia® and Doc Express® software. Ensuring your organization has a robust audit trail is key to ensuring project audits go smoothly. Don’t earn these funds simply to lose them due to a lack of compliance or reporting. FHWA Grants

STIC Incentive Program

The State Transportation Innovation Council (STIC) Incentive program incentivizes innovation by providing up to $100,000 per year in financial support to offset the costs of implementing and standardizing innovative practices in a state transportation agency. Eligible projects must have a statewide impact on innovation.

AID Demonstration Program

The Accelerated Innovation Deployment (AID) program is another resource available to agencies that are looking to offset the costs of deploying an innovative practice. As innovation comes with inherent risk, the goal of this program is to minimize the risk of trying out a new innovative practice.

AMR Program

The Accelerating Market Readiness (AMR) program focuses on supporting projects that enhance roadway safety, shorten the project delivery process, or improve the performance of transportation infrastructure. Agencies seeking funds for tests, field evaluations, and pilot programs should look into this program.

USDOT Grants

BUILD Discretionary Grants

Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development (BUILD) Transportation Discretionary Grants were launched in 2018 as part of a $1 billion program to improve American infrastructure. These grants are for planning and capital investments into surface transportation infrastructure. Check back to see if these grants will continue in the Biden administration.

TIFIA Rural Project Initiative

The Rural Project Initiative was created to help improve infrastructure in rural communities, especially since these communities often struggle to match funds. This initiative provides loans for up to 49% of a project’s eligible costs at a fixed interest rate.

Infrastructure For Rebuilding America Grants

Infrastructure For Rebuilding America (INFRA) grants were announced in 2020 as the key part of a $906 million investment into American infrastructure. Proposals for 2020 funding are currently being reviewed by Congress as part of the FAST Act. Check back to see if these grants will continue in the Biden administration.

Automated Driving System Grants

In 2019, the US Department of Transportation announced $60 million in Federal support grants for agencies attempting to implement automated driving systems in their area. Check back to see if these grants will continue in the Biden administration.

FTA Grants

AIP Grants

The Airport Improvement Program (AIP) offers funds for aviation projects such as runways, taxiways, airport signage, airport lighting, and airport markings. If you work in aviation, research whether your airport is entitled to AIP funding based on their passenger volume.

Check Back for Application Availability

Keep in mind that many of these programs only accept applications for grant funding at certain times throughout the year. We recommend bookmarking the grants that your agency is interested in and taking note of the application deadlines.
